North 2012

Peter outside the Aquarius

We went North. Past my family’s farmland and past where the other side settled; past Cordova Mines and Eldorado; into the dead end that is Sulphide and back out again; past the Aquarius Motel; past CFB Petawawa and Chalk River’s isotope plant; over the bridge to Quebec; past the seemingly empty countryside of rural French Canada; through the red-painted covered bridge into Fort-Coulonge; all the way back to Ottawa for cheap, delicious Indian food; then out of town on Bank Road, past mob-front pizzerias with rows of cars parked out front but not a soul sitting in the restaurant; past a sketchy Howard Johnson’s outside of Smith’s Falls, past the prisons of Kingston (and all the other institutions that permeate the streets there); past Greater Napanee; past countless Tim Hortons and McDonalds; past the arching cement gates of the GTA, and back home.
