Wandering in Peterborough

Trent University

So after seeing Peterborough Square, we actually ended up spending our New Years Eve in a surprisingly nice motel in Peterborough. Much less sketchy than Brantford’s accommodations earlier in the trip, and infinitely less terrifying than the Dream Inn from our previous trip to Sudbury, where the room had a back access that didn’t lock in any way, an unfrosted window in the bathroom that looked into said back access hallway, and a proprietor who was friendly, but maybe a bit… well let’s just say he had a voice like Truman Capote.

Before settling down in the motel though, we did do a bit of exploring around Peterborough. We ran across a pretty awesome outreach centre that said “Jesus is Lord” on the side. Brie recognized the name from a book, so we stopped and grabbed some photos. We also visited the Trent University campus, which had been abandoned for the holidays. Just like the Brantford City Hall, I highly suggest checking this place out if you’re a Brutalism nerd – it’s truly beautiful, in an uncompromising, raw, concrete sort of way.

So this is the last set of photos from my cross-Ontario trip. I hope you enjoyed the journey and that whoever is reading out there stays tuned for more weird and eclectic content in the future.

  1. Those photos of Trent’s campus are awesome! The school has an interesting vibe to it when the students are away. Another time, you should check out Catherine Parr Traill campus; it’s much smaller, but gorgeous. – Editor of DON’T PANIC: A Trent Graduate Student Blog.

    • Thanks! I think it’s really beautiful. I actually very nearly attended Trent because I loved the campus so much, but it just didn’t offer the right program for me. Anyways, I will definitely check out the other campus the next time I’m in the area. Thanks for the suggestion!
